Tangent Online has reviewed my Strange Horizons story, “Beside Calais.” Definitely a mixed review – Matthew Nadelhaft said that “the story suffered from wordiness and overwriting,” but that “its plot is rich and wise” and that it’s a “powerful meditation on our domineering and abusive relationship to the natural world.”
Lois Tilton at Locus liked it better, calling it “uniquely memorable” and giving it a “Recommended.”
A recommendation of my own: Nghi Vo’s “Tiger Stripes,” also at Strange Horizons. A beautifully written, deceptively simple story about the relationship between a window and the tiger that eats her son.
It was meant to be a mostly positive review; I’m sorry if it sounded overly critical. I was very touched by the theme and characters.
